Contractors are reporting that the number one home remodeling project this year is none other than the bathroom. The challenge for remodelers is that homeowners don’t want the same old look of decades past. Younger homeowners are gravitating away from the hassles of grout, particularly the never ending job of making it look brand new. In other words, they want something that is easier to clean. Gone are the days of re-caulking and having to fight grout mold spots that occur in homes near the ocean or high humidity areas. The less maintenance, the better!
Along with little-to-no-maintenance products, consumers are looking to find ways to ease their overall workload around the house. Trends that are now evident include walk-in showers with frame-less, thick glass doors because they are easier to maintain. An even better option is to build a door-less walk-in shower (if the space permits) to avoid door maintenance as a whole. If a homeowner absolutely insists on a tub in the master bath to compliment the redesigned shower, free standing jet-less soaking tubs are a popular and must-have style. Otherwise, combination tub and showers are out. Floating vanities and creating the illusion of a larger bathroom space are definitely in.
Trends in fixtures include chrome, brushed nickel, and bronze.
Trends in materials include marble, glass, quartz, granite as usual, and modern, sleek fixtures. Tight-fitting porcelain and ceramic tiles are huge in the flooring department. Believe it or not luxury vinyl with an updated twist is making a strong comeback as well! Luxury vinyl tile has been used commercially for years and is now being utilized in residential projects since the costs have progressively become more competitive.
The biggest style trend for bathrooms this year, however? The personal spa at home! Enjoying a luxury spa-like experience at the comfort of one’s own home has been sought after now more than ever. Colors used are pastels and light/airy neutrals. A minimalist approach allows for an open feeling of less bulk and clutter in the master bath which makes the space feel like the ultimate at-home spa. So good, you’ll never want to leave! Until you start to prune, at least.
