3 Key Home Trends

Posted on January 27th, 2018 by Nastazsa Lin Cabrera

Remodeling  your home can be a decision based on various reasons. Some homeowners remodel just before reselling in order to get an increased profit. Other homeowners are more inclined to stay put and want to update their out-of-date floor plan. Their goal is to age-in-place and enjoy their home in the meantime. Several things can modernize an older home but the three most requested projects that are keeping contractors and designers busy are the following topics of discussion.

Open Space

The open floor plan is still the most requested project. Older homes with walled-off rooms isolated the cook in the kitchen from the family in the next room. Removing a wall between the kitchen and formal dining room results in a combined casual use space for families with children doing homework at the table while other family members cook. It also provides freed up space to entertain friends who usually wind up in the kitchen. This allows more freedom to move and may just allow an island to fit providing more counter space to work from.

Designing for The Future

Age accommodation is a frequent design request for those homeowners who wish to remain in their home or for younger homeowners who plan to care for their elderly parents eventually. Ease of movement with the necessary equipment is the goal. Wider doorways for a wheelchair and a walker are only part of the design for more comfort. Bathroom upgrades that have a large walk-in shower with a wide door or no door at all are at the top of the list. A built-in shower chair or a teak bench plus multiple shower heads is important. Hand rails are also not left out of the design plans. Kitchen plans include a sink with hands-free faucet and often include deep dish drawers and a microwave drawer. Non-slip floor tiles are always important both inside the shower itself and outside of it. Many are putting these floor tiles in the kitchen as well.

Environmental Home Design

There are a few suggestions to consider that are environmentally sound. To save on energy costs, homeowners are encouraged to include high-efficiency windows, energy saving appliances, upgrading the insulation and installing a high-efficiency HVAC system. This is pairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, specific for the size of the home. Energy savings for the homeowner is the end result even before the age-in-place years begin.
