How to Complement Your Granite Floor or Marble Floor

March 31, 2013

So you upgraded your floors using gorgeous granite or marble flooring, and now you want to make the most of it. With proper care and the right accessories, you can enhance the appearance of your floor and ensure its continued preservation for as long as you are in the house.

While you might not want to cover up a single inch of your beautiful flooring, there are advantages to taking certain precautions to protect against unnecessary wear and tear. Both granite and marble are extremely hardy and durable, making them ideal flooring materials. However, exposure to sand and salt and other things you might carry in on your shoes can cause abrasion and pitting to the floor over time. You can reduce this kind of damage by placing tasteful rugs in strategic locations, such as entryways and high traffic areas. With the right style of rugs, you will find that they actually accentuate the flooring rather than just covering it up.

Appropriate furniture can also make quite a difference in how striking your new floor looks in your home. Depending on the color and style of marble or granite tile you selected, you might prefer natural wood pieces or more modern designs. Regardless of your preferred aesthetic, it is advisable that you reduce the risk of scratching or marring the floor by placing foot covers on all your furniture and using sliders when moving your belongings around.

Cleaning your marble or granite floor is also an important part of maintaining and caring for it for years to come. You should avoid using a vacuum cleaner with a beater brush when possible due to its abrasiveness and likelihood of collecting potentially damaging debris from other parts of the house. A soft mop or broom will do the trick just as well without harming the stone or causing deterioration. Wash your floor regularly and always clean up any spills as soon as possible to maintain its luster and natural beauty. Only use products that are specifically designed for granite or marble to preserve the integrity of the stone and protect against damage caused by inappropriate or overly harsh chemicals.

Now that you finally have your dream floor installed, why risk letting anything diminish its natural regality and elegance? With appropriate accessories and regular care, you will be able to enjoy your new granite or marble floor for decades to come.

How to complement your granite countertop or marble countertop

March 18, 2013

Congratulations! You’ve taken the leap and revitalized your kitchen with a sleek, new granite or marble countertop. Now, understandably, you want to enhance your investment even further by accentuating the luxurious, elegant look of your new countertop. There are numerous options for every budget that will provide just the right counterpoint to your recent kitchen upgrade.

If you have a generous budget, custom cabinets are an excellent complement to marble or granite countertops. Depending on the color and style of the countertop you selected, you will find that certain types of cabinets work better than others. For example, granite or marble in cool shades of gray or white will often look best with sleek, stainless steel appliances and light fixtures. White cabinets and plenty of glass also work well with this modern look. Conversely, earthy brown and cream shades of marble or granite are better paired with natural wood cabinetry and warmer lighting. Stainless steel appliances and accents look good in almost any kitchen, but coppery tones can be an unexpected and handsome alternative if you prefer a kitchen filled with rich browns and reds.

Even if you aren’t ready to invest in custom designed cabinetry just yet, the same principles apply to prefab cabinets and storage solutions. With the right attention to complementary design elements and color palettes, you can create a stunning kitchen look that is cohesive and inviting.

Lighting is another key way to draw attention to your granite or marble countertop. By choosing the right lighting and fixtures, you can emphasize the unique, natural patterns and colors found in the stone and enhance its lustrous shine. Under cabinet lighting is highly recommended for kitchens with marble or granite countertops because it reduces the shadowing caused by cabinets that is common with overhead lighting. Pendant lights or track lights are also good options for creating a gentle, spotlight effect that pulls your eye directly to the countertop. For any of these light fixtures, adding a lens over the bulb is a neat little trick for minimizing glare off the reflective surface of your countertop.

Regardless of your lighting and cabinetry preferences, the most important thing you can do to really show off your marble or granite countertop is to take good care of it. To minimize scratches, etchings, and unsightly stains, use a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner that is specifically designed for granite or marble and promptly clean up any spills of acidic substances, like vinegar or tomato juice. If you properly care for your countertops on a consistent basis, they can last for decades to come.

Helpful Tips to Clean and Protect Your Granite

June 19, 2012

Granite tile has long been considered a wonderful investment for your home.  Thus, it’s important to care for your granite and protect it from damage so your investment is preserved for years to come.  At Stone Tile Liquidators, we care about your granite investment long after you purchase from our natural stone tile store.  We’ve provided a few tips and suggestions to not only clean your granite but protect it.

Apply Sealant – Sealant is a great way to protect your granite.  It is recommended that your installer apply this once a year for optimal results.

pH Balanced Soap – A little soap and warm water will always go a long ways in protecting your granite.  Make sure the soap, such as dishwashing soap, is pH balanced.

Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol – This is one of the most recommended ways to clean your granite, but also make it shiny.  Make sure to use a spray bottle, mix 1/4 cup of isopropyl rubbing alcohol, dishwashing soap (a couple drops), and fill the rest with water.

Be Careful with Your Pots/Pans – Even one scratch can be harmful to your granite especially when liquid seeps into it.  Carefully move your pots and pans and avoid dragging them as best you can.  Steel wool pads are recommended if any marks are made from pots and pans.

Don’t Let Acidic Liquids Sit for Too Long – If you spill liquids such as soda, or anything with lemon juice and vinegar, they should be wiped up immediately to avoid corroding the protective layer.

These are just a few of the many tips we’ll be updating on our blog in order to care for your granite tile investment.  Also, don’t hesitate to call us with any questions — 1.877.770.8453.
